What is Highland Hearth?
An introduction to the idea behind Highland Hearth and the cosy villager simulation I want to build.
Highland Hearth is a pixel-art village simulation game inspired by games such as RimWorld, Stardew Valley, Banished, and Kingdoms Reborn.
Set in a world inspired by the Scottish Highlands, you lead a small group of exiled settlers as they establish a new clan in the wilderness. Starting with only a handful of supplies, you'll explore the surrounding landscape, gather resources, construct homes and workshops, and gradually grow a thriving settlement.
Every villager is an individual with their own stats, needs, relationships, and daily routines. As your clan expands, villagers will form friendships, raise families, take on specialised professions, and help shape the story of your settlement.
The core experience of Highland Hearth is built around three pillars:
Explore
Each world is procedurally generated, encouraging you to venture into the unknown. Send scouts to discover new resources, uncover opportunities, and reveal the landscape surrounding your settlement.
Manage
Assign jobs, construct buildings, gather resources, and organise your growing village. From farming and fishing to crafting and construction, every villager contributes to the success of the clan.
Survive
The Highlands can be unforgiving. Seasonal changes, limited resources, and the challenges of frontier life will test your ability to plan ahead and keep your villagers healthy, fed, and sheltered throughout the year.
A Living Clan
At the heart of Highland Hearth are the villagers themselves. Rather than managing anonymous workers, you'll guide a community of unique individuals whose relationships, ambitions, and stories emerge naturally as the settlement grows.
Whether you're designing cosy homes, expanding your economy, exploring the wilderness, or watching generations of villagers build a new future together, every settlement develops its own story.
Highland Hearth is being developed entirely by a single developer, including all programming, artwork, and design.
